The Monkey Without a Shadow

As a grubby little boy I wrote a short story. I’m not sure why. Maybe I was born to be a writer and had no other choice? The other possibility is that writing that one story ruined me for life. It’s like the chicken-or-the-egg riddle, I suppose.
The Monkey Without a Shadow was about a kid-monkey driven from his “herd” for being born without a shadow, (as if that was his fault, right?). He survived on his own, stole from the tribe that deemed him a pariah and befriended a half-dead cricket who later saved his ass. It was a pretty good story.

Looking back now it’s almost as if my second grade mind knew that I didn’t fit the norm. Furthermore, boy-Lake knew that being a writer was going to be hard. It would require ingenuity and justifiable thievery, not to mention some bold ass kicking.

omg… love the picture!
ah, it’s so sweet and so sad. i like that he found where he belongs.
Ha ha – what a brat, huh? Those pictures of me as a child explain almost everything. Thanks, cowriter.
It seems that perhaps you felt like you were that monkey. Maybe back then you didn’t realize it but looking back now, have you given it any thought? Regardless, I love it and even for adults….we all have to find the place where we belong……does that ever really happen? LOL just kidding! Cute story and I, too, love the picture!
Yeah, def! I think most of us spend our lives defining the place where we belong, then enjoying and hating it’s changing seasons. It’s life, both beautiful and a step away from tragic. (The story also explains why I hate bananas.

Wow! You were destined to write. This story has everything! A definite conflict, high stakes, youthful (monkey) angst, more conflict, suspense, a moral (be nice to crickets). You were a literary talent early on… and you had excellent penmanship!
(Thanks for tweeting, so I knew to come look.)
Judy – LOL! I think I’ll start a band and call it Monkey Angst. Thanks for commenting. I so appreciate your support.

hey btw…..I’m loving your logo. Not sure how new or old it is…but for some reason my eyes just paid attention to it!! ; )
It’s so evocative, and shows how kids (at least bright, creative ones) know so much intuitively. I love that little monkey.
Lee! Thank you for visiting. It means the world to me. But most of all, thanks for loving that little monkey! He always knew he’d find good friends.
